Frequently Asked Questions

Approximately how much will my sauna cost to run?

A typical sauna session including heating time won’t exceed one hour. The following running costs are based on €0.40 per kWh tariff from your electricity supplier:

Model NamePower RunningCost (Per Hour)
Evolve Mini1390W€0.56
Evolve 101710W€0.70
Evolve 202040W€0.83
Evolve 302255W€0.90

What's the maximum temperature & warm up time?

Sun Stream infrared saunas have a maximum cabin temperature setting of 65°C. However, unlike a traditional sauna, infrared heat directly warms your body rather than relying primarily on heating the surrounding air. This means you can experience an intense sweat at a much lower cabin temperature.

The infrared heaters reach operating temperature quickly, so only around 10–15 minutes of pre-heating is normally required before beginning your sauna session.

For those who prefer a more intense experience, the combination of 100% infrared intensity and a higher cabin temperature can produce a very powerful heat. Most users find their preferred balance of infrared intensity and cabin temperature after just a few sessions.

Are our saunas difficult to install?

No. Sun Stream saunas are designed for quick and easy home assembly. The wall panels simply slot together using an invisible fastening system, creating a strong, secure connection without complicated construction.

Most of the electrical components are plug-and-play, and assembly generally requires only a screwdriver for the door handle and a few minor tasks. None of our models require special electrical installation.

Depending on the model, assembly typically takes around 30–90 minutes.

Can I put my sauna outside?

Sun Stream saunas are designed for indoor use. Our saunas are constructed from natural, untreated timber and are not treated with the chemical preservatives and weatherproof coatings that would be required for permanent outdoor exposure.

For this reason, Sun Stream saunas should not be installed outdoors or anywhere they may be exposed to rain, excessive moisture or weather. Saunas installed outdoors are not covered by our Lifetime Warranty.

Why don't you supply Cedar saunas?

Western Red Cedar is a beautiful timber and is commonly used in saunas. However, its distinctive aroma comes from naturally occurring compounds in the wood, and cedar is known to cause sensitivity or irritation in some people.

For this reason, we prefer Canadian Hemlock for Sun Stream saunas. Hemlock has very little characteristic odour or resin, making it an excellent choice for the enclosed, heated environment of an infrared sauna — particularly for customers who are sensitive to strong smells.

Combined with our untreated timber, water-based glues and carefully selected materials, Hemlock fits perfectly with our approach to creating a clean, natural sauna environment.

I Am Sensitive to Chemicals and Strong Odours. Is a Sun Stream Sauna Suitable?

Sun Stream saunas are designed with chemically sensitive customers in mind. We use 100% Canadian Hemlock with no plywood, carefully selected water-based glues and low-VOC materials. Our Nano-Carbon heaters have also been independently tested for VOC emissions, with results below the laboratory’s level of detection.

Canadian Hemlock has very little characteristic odour or resin, which is one of the reasons we choose it instead of more aromatic timbers such as cedar.

Individual sensitivities vary, however, so if you have a known chemical or material sensitivity, we recommend discussing this with your healthcare professional before use.

What is the difference between an infrared sauna and a traditional sauna?

The main difference is how the body is heated. A traditional sauna heats the air inside the cabin to a high temperature, which then heats your body. Water may also be poured over heated stones to create steam and increase humidity.

An infrared sauna uses radiant infrared heat to warm your body more directly, allowing you to sweat at a lower and generally more comfortable cabin temperature.

Infrared saunas also require no plumbing or water supply, making them easy to install in a bedroom, home gym, garage or other suitable indoor space.

How Long Would An Average Sauna Session Last?

Most infrared sauna sessions last around 20–30 minutes, although this varies depending on the individual, the temperature and infrared intensity you choose, and how accustomed you are to sauna use.

If you’re new to infrared saunas, you may prefer to begin with shorter sessions and gradually increase the duration as you become accustomed to the heat. Always listen to your body and leave the sauna if you begin to feel uncomfortable, dizzy or unwell.

If you have a medical condition or are unsure whether sauna use is appropriate for you, consult your doctor or healthcare professional.

How often can I use the sauna?

There is no single answer as everyone is different. Many healthy adults use an infrared sauna several times per week, while experienced sauna users may choose to use one daily. How often you use your sauna will depend on your personal preference, session length and how your body responds to the heat.

If you’re new to sauna use, start gradually and make sure you remain well hydrated. If you have a medical condition or any concerns about sauna use, check with your doctor or healthcare professional.

Should I wear any clothing during my sauna session?

For the most comfortable infrared sauna experience, many people choose to wear very light clothing, such as a swimsuit, while others prefer to use their sauna without clothing when privacy allows. The most important consideration is to wear as little as you feel comfortable with so your skin is exposed to the infrared heat.

Heavy clothing can reduce your comfort by trapping heat and preventing perspiration from evaporating naturally, making your sauna session feel hotter than necessary.

For hygiene and comfort, we recommend sitting on a clean towel and keeping a second towel nearby to wipe away perspiration during your session.

Are Full Spectrum Infrared Saunas Better?

The Purpose of a Sauna

To safely heat your body, raise your core temperature and produce a deep, comfortable sweat.

Far infrared is exceptionally well suited to this because it is readily absorbed by the water in our skin, efficiently generating heat within the body.

What About Near Infrared?

Near Infrared is widely researched for photobiomodulation (light therapy), where LEDs or lasers emitting specific wavelengths—commonly around 660 nm and 850 nm—are positioned very close to the body.

Why Sun Stream Chose Far Infrared

Rather than attempting to combine two very different technologies into one product at great compromise to the effectiveness of both treatments, Sun Stream has chosen to optimise each therapy for its intended purpose.

What About Full Spectrum Saunas?

Current photobiomodulation research has generally used high-intensity LEDs or lasers positioned close to the treatment area. In many full spectrum sauna designs, users are much further from the far less powerful Near Infrared source, which may affect the amount of light reaching the body. For this reason, Sun Stream has chosen not to market our saunas as “full spectrum”, instead focusing on optimising Far Infrared without  compromising the sweating experience, which is the entire purpose of buying an infrared sauna.

Are Carbon Fibre Heaters Better Than Ceramic Heaters?

In our opinion, yes. Carbon fibre panel heaters offer significant advantages over traditional ceramic heaters in terms of comfort, durability and infrared heat distribution. That’s why every Sun Stream sauna is equipped with premium nano-carbon heating panels.

Longer Lasting Performance
Carbon fibre panels operate at lower temperatures than ceramic heaters, placing less stress on the heating elements. This contributes to exceptional long-term reliability and is one of the reasons we confidently back our saunas with a lifetime residential warranty.

Powerful, Even Infrared Heat
Large nano-carbon heating panels distribute infrared heat evenly across a much larger surface area than ceramic tube heaters. This provides exceptional body coverage and a consistently powerful sauna experience without the concentrated hot spots associated with ceramic tube heaters.

Superior 360° Body Coverage
Large nano-carbon panels surround your body with infrared heat from multiple directions, providing far more even heat distribution than narrow ceramic tubes. This allows more of your body to be exposed to infrared energy, creating a deeper, more comfortable and consistent sauna experience.
